A plate heat exchanger, commonly called a PHE, is a compact and efficient way to transfer heat between two separate fluids. It uses a series of thin, corrugated stainless-steel plates arranged in a frame. Hot and cold fluids travel through alternating channels, allowing heat to pass through the plates without the fluids mixing.
Plate heat exchangers are commonly used for heating, cooling, heat recovery, and pasteurization in food, dairy, beverage, pharmaceutical, HVAC, and other industrial applications.
The Main Components
Plates
The stainless-steel plates provide the surface where heat transfer occurs. Their corrugated patterns create turbulence, which improves heat transfer and helps reduce buildup.
Gaskets
Gaskets seal the plate channels and direct each fluid through the correct path. Selecting the proper gasket material is critical because temperature, cleaning chemicals, oils, and product composition can affect gasket life.
Frame and Compression Bolts
The frame holds the plate pack securely in place. Compression bolts maintain the correct plate-pack dimension and gasket pressure to prevent leaks and keep the unit operating properly.
Why Plate Selection Matters
Plate shape, channel spacing, corrugation depth, and chevron angle all affect performance. Some designs provide greater heat transfer but create more pressure drop. Wider channels may be better for thicker products, fibers, or small particulates.
The correct design must balance:
- Required heating or cooling capacity
- Allowable pressure drop
- Product viscosity
- Fouling potential
- Cleaning requirements
- Operating temperature and chemistry
Benefits of Plate Heat Exchangers
Plate heat exchangers provide excellent heat-transfer efficiency in a relatively small footprint. They are also serviceable, expandable, and well suited for hygienic applications.
However, long-term performance depends on correct sizing, proper gasket and plate selection, accurate compression, and regular inspection.
